![]() ![]() There is no good or evil character only characters that choose to do good or evil and may choose differently at any moment. There is a modern feel to it in that the psychology of the characters, even down to their irrational beliefs, determines their actions and their outcomes. ![]() ![]() The greatness of this novel is in its complexity. But one strives to be moral, and the other flouts morality. Each had nothing but his or her intelligence to educate and polish them. Each was exposed to adults who abused them. No family to care for them as children, no formal education, nothing to set them up in life. The author tells the tale of two remarkable people who began life with the worst sort of luck. With this beautiful production, I've been given a chance to listen to it again and again and delve deeply into the complexities of this story. These two end up on a bit of an adventure when they must work together to stop a big bad evil all the while trying to keep Crispin from being arrested when he can't help but fall back on using the only (highly illegal) magic he's ever known. This is the continued story of Crispin, a warlock struggling to learn how to use his powers for good, and his paper-seller beau, Ned. I just treated them like an established couple in this book and their backstory is summed up well. Story: Note: I just found out that Crispin and Ned are introduced in the short story A Queer Trade, so I'm off to read that! I don't think I had any issues having not read it first, though. Narration: Cornell is probably my favorite narrator of historical romances, so I'm 100% biased and loved his narration of Rag and Bone. The self-immolating allure of queer desire hadn't occurred to me in 1998, when Eliza Dushku joined the cast of Buffy the Vampire Slayer as the impulsive, irrepressible new Slayer, Faith.
